Taxonomy codes no longer Medicare eligible

May 2, 2023

Lakeland Care Network (LCN) was recently informed by Humana that certain taxonomy codes are no longer accepted by their Medicare product as of 10/31/2022. Per Humana, providers with the attached taxonomy codes are no longer eligible for Medicare reimbursement. The intent of this letter is to provide you awareness to this issue. We have not heard from any other of our Medicare payors on this.

Per Humana, providers will have to be fully licensed and able to work independently to be eligible for reimbursement. If the provider believes that their licensure level is Medicare eligible, they can reply to the email address: HumanaMedicareEligibility@Humana.com and attach any supporting information. You can also call Humana Customer Service at: 800-457-4708 Monday thru Friday 8 am to 8 pm, Eastern time.

LCN did some additional investigation upon receiving this surprise and recent notification by Humana. We have found some additional resources for you. The taxonomy codes listed in this document do not appear on the complete data set on the (cms.gov) Medicare site. You can visit the link below to find a complete list of approved taxonomy codes.

How can I access the taxonomy code data set?

CMS has created a crosswalk of taxonomy codes that links the types of providers and suppliers who are eligible to apply for enrollment in the Medicare program with the appropriate Healthcare Provider Taxonomy Codes. View the complete data set on data.cms.gov, where you can select various download formats to view the entire list.

If you see Humana Medicare patients and have one of the non-reimbursable taxonomy codes, you may want to take action.  If we hear of any additional information around this topic, we will pass it along promptly.
