Speaker: Mark Graber, MD, FACP, Senior Fellow at RTI International, Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Stony Brook University, and President of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine
Dr. Graber will summarize the key findings and recommendations from the recent landmark report from the National Academy of Medicine on Improving Diagnosis in Health Care. Diagnostic errors are common; an estimated 40,000 – 80,000 deaths annually are attributable to diagnostic error in the US. These errors reflect the complexity and uncertainty associated with the diagnostic process, but also shortcomings in our healthcare systems, and the many ways that ‘human nature’ interferes with optimal clinical reasoning. Easy, low-cost suggestions for improving diagnosis will be provided for patients, providers, and healthcare organizations.
